12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”-Luke14:12-14
Normally, when we
give a party, we invite friends, relatives, family, neighbors and
those we consider important in our lives. In turn we attend their
party also. Such is the cycle.
Jesus is teaching
us something else - when we give a party, we invite the poor,
crippled, lame and the blind. Is Jesus teaching us not to invite
friends, relatives, family, neighbors and those we consider important
in our lives when we give parties? Not exactly. We ought to remember
that Jesus Himself attended a party and dinner invitations before
such as the wedding in Cana. For me, Jesus is teaching us to extend
our generosity to the poor, the lame, blind and crippled as well. If
we are happy with our blessings, this happiness and blessings should
be shared to others as well especially to those who have nothing.
